The £16,887 Dress (WIP)
Cerys Nelmes went to Turkey for a holiday. She came home 148 days later.
It wasn’t the holiday romance she’d been joking about on social media.
A day trip to Istanbul, a £27.99 dress from Zara and one spectacularly unfortunate mistake resulted in Cerys being arrested, taken to a police station and discovering that Turkey wasn’t quite as keen for her to leave as she’d hoped.
What followed was a travel ban, court dates, three lawyers, rapidly disappearing money, a GoFundMe that raised £16,887 and nearly five months living in a country she hadn’t planned on staying in.
And somewhere in the middle of all that is the actual dress that started it.
The £16,887 Dress is Cerys Nelmes’ first solo stand-up show: the true story of how an ordinary holiday turned into the most ridiculous, frightening and expensive 148 days of her life.
From making jokes in a Turkish police station because she genuinely thought she’d be leaving shortly, to slowly realising that this wasn’t a misunderstanding that was going to sort itself out, Cerys tells the story of bad decisions, worse timing, unexpected kindness and what happens when your funniest story stops being funny while you’re still living it.
She’s home now.
She’s got the dress.
She might as well get a show out of it.
Work in progress.
