What if every 21-year-old was shown a video of what their life would really be like after having children? Comedian and TV writer Les Keen reckons humanity would be extinct within a generation.
In his new Edinburgh Fringe show, Dinosaur: How to Wipe Out the Human Race, Les investigates one of life’s biggest decisions, whether having kids is a good idea.
As a 60-year-old with a bus pass, two grown-up children and decades of accumulated parental trauma, Les is perfectly qualified to examine the financial, emotional and practical realities of family life.
Birth rates are falling, cash-strapped youngsters are putting off parenthood and politicians are fearful of the impact of a rapidly ageing population.
Maybe the dinosaurs weren’t wiped out by an asteroid after all. Maybe they just saw their mates with dinosaur kids and went, ‘naaaaaah’.
The world is sitting on a demographic time bomb, and Les has his hand on the trigger switch.
Can stand-up comedy ever work as a public service? Les asks the questions even your own parents don’t want to answer. Why are parents so keen for the next generation to reproduce? And why, despite everything, do people keep doing it?
“Until I was 35, I didn’t want children,” says Les. “Then some strange biological urge kicked in. 25 years later, I think people deserve to know exactly what they’re signing up for.”
Despite explaining why parenthood might be humanity’s greatest strategic error, Les admits the show is ultimately a love letter to having children. Even his own.
Les is one of British comedy’s most experienced writers, with more than 500 hours of primetime television to his name, including the 11 O’clock Show, 8 Out of 10 Cats, and Take Me Out, where he created the catchphrase “No likey, no lighty”.
His online comedy clips attract tens of millions of views across social media, while his live work combines decades of writing experience with the unpredictability of a seasoned stand-up who is perfectly happy to follow an audience wherever it leads.
